Tips for Writing Your College Essay

“The key to all successful college essay is simple – tell a story. Don’t be fooled in trying to imitate the lives of others. Try to be yourself. Find your life theme. Find your message. And honestly appeal to the audience through vivid, honest, specific, and logical story.”

May students read commercially published essays and essays of their seniors and peers. There is nothing wrong with this, but the problem is that whenever a student reads a ‘successful essay,’ they believe that this is the rule. However, the reason why this labeled essay was successful was because it reflected the honest life of the applicant. It was a window into the activities he or she had done. It helped the admission officers to read between lines of the facts provided in the other parts of the application. Therefore, remember to be honest. You can refer to the lives and stories of others. However, at the end of the day, it is your essay. It is your story. It is your life that must be delivered.

Common Mistakes in Writing Your College Essay

We cannot overemphasize the importance of the main essay. It has been demonstrated year after year that a good main essay has been the vehicle in adding competitiveness to an applicant’s success in admission. However, due to this very fact, many students make mistakes that undermine the quality of their essays. A good essay is something that positively communicates the applicant’s passion and personality, and nothing more. However, some students rehash their activities and accomplishments without adding this personal color as well as failing to provide the perspective and substance which the admission committee looks for. Therefore, when writing your essay, please avoid the following mistakes.

“There must be a best topic”

- the common application provides students with 7 different topics, and there is no hierarchy among the questions.

- the best question is the one which can most effectively highlight yourself with the necessary depth and width

“Don’t go Off Topic”

- please read the question carefully and pay attention to the different parts of the question

- while it is provided as a single question, each question entails several parts of analysis

- make sure that you address each element logically and honestly

“Don’t talk about the Life of Others”

- there is nothing wrong with paying reference to the story of those around you

- however, it is your essay, and it should not be overloaded with references to something other than yourself

“Don’t talk in the Third-Person”

- your essay must be specific and personal

- you must focus on using the first person perspective and proper nouns in your essay

“Don’t come out as being self-interested”

- there is a difference between being individual and being self-interested

- in your essay, while you are talking about yourself, you must portray a appealing image of who you are: a caring person benefiting those around you

“Don’t appear as Materialistic”

- many focus too much on accomplishments and goals

- however, your essay should be focused on the values and the ‘Why’s’

“Don’t try to find a Life-Changing Event’

- many look for topics that are extraordinary

- however, life-changing moments happen in your daily lives, thus don’t overlook the mundane

“Don’t focus on your Volunteer Trip”

- volunteering is a great virtue requiring commitment and sacrifice

- therefore, don’t write about the one-occasion event you participated over the summer

“Don’t Reiterate Your Resume”

- your essay is a story into yourself, to the world that is not reflected in the application

- it helps the reader to better understand your inner world

- so, avoid simply repeating what has already been stated in your resume

“Make sure all your essays work in unison”

- you are required to write multiple essays during your admission process, and each essay must serve to supplement each other rather than working in isolation

- make sure that the tone, message, and the individual expressed through these essays serve both coherence and diversity in understanding who you are

“Don’t forget that your essay is a logical essay”

- many emphasize the importance of storytelling in your essay

- however, you must also not forget that behind this story telling, there must be logic and structure: in actuality, you are writing an approximately 600 word length novel

“Don’t talk too much about yourself”

- while we want to appeal to the audience by addressing several aspects of our lives, simply focus on one strong personality and idea in your essay

“Don’t simply state – elaborate”

- many fall into the trap of listing of facts, failing to add the necessary depth

- furthermore, everything you say must be supported by strong evidence and elaboration
